In Possession, Out of Possession: FM26’s New Tactical Evo...

Now, we’re thrilled to announce that one of the most requested features from our community is being added to FM26 - separate In Possession and Out of Possession formations. These are just part of t...

1. Separate In Possession and Out of Possession Formations

  • Dual Formations: Managers can now select two distinct formations when creating a tactic:

    • In Possession: The base structure defining player positioning when the team has the ball (e.g., building from the back).

    • Out of Possession: The shape the team adopts when defending in a settled block (e.g., a 4-3-3 with the ball might transition to a 4-1-4-1 off the ball).

  • Flexibility: While the game suggests complementary defensive shapes, managers have full freedom to select any combination, with backroom staff flagging overly risky or impractical setups.

  • Tactics Menu Redesign: The menu offers four distinct views: In Possession, Out of Possession, Both (side-by-side comparison), and Combined (showing average positions and used for central team selection).

2. The Visualiser

  • New Tool: A powerful feature found in the Team Instructions menu that shows how formations and tactics play out on the pitch, divided into three vertical zones (thirds of the field).

  • Phases of Play: By clicking on the grid squares, managers can see how a player's positioning and the team's shape shift as the ball moves through different phases of play (e.g., an Inside Wing-Back drifting into a Defensive Midfield position as the team attacks).

3. Evolved Player Roles

  • Overhaul: Player roles have been redefined to fully support the dual formation system.

  • In Possession Roles: The existing roles have been reviewed, with some receiving new names (e.g., Goodbye to Mezzala, Enganche, Trequartista), new functionality (e.g., Inside Forward), and entirely new roles, such as:

    • No-Nonsense Goalkeeper

    • Overlapping Centre-Back

    • Playmaking Wing-Back

    • Midfield Playmaker

    • Wide Forward

    • Channel Forward

  • New Out of Possession Roles: An entirely new set of roles dictate how players operate when defending (e.g., high press, low block). A player's suitability for these roles depends on positional familiarity and key attributes.

  • Removed Duties: The traditional 'Duties' system has been removed, as the flexibility of the dual formations and role sets provides a clearer picture of player instructions.

4. Match Engine and Intelligence Upgrades

The Match Engine has been revamped to reflect the new tactical freedom, including:

  • Passing: Rewritten pass risk assessment for more incisive, line-breaking passes, and increased player creativity (sliding passes around defenders, lifting the ball).

  • Dribbling: Upgraded dribbling logic, allowing players to stand up markers and burst past them. Inside-footed wingers cut inside more naturally.

  • Attacking: Midfielders time half-space runs more intelligently, and forwards are sharper at spotting and executing cutback opportunities. A new team instruction, Pass to Feet, is introduced.

  • Defending: Refined team structures and pressing shapes, reworked interception logic, and significant upgrades to Goalkeeper save logic and distribution.
