Fml 3D

Missed me? :)

It's probably the worst kept FML secret ever, but 3D will be making its debut in the next major update of Football Manager Live.

Since the reboot in March things have been pretty manic within the team and we've spent a lot of time supporting the game, polishing and making performance improvements.

Thanks to everyone for your patience and at times understanding during this important phase and although we're not there yet we're continuing to make great strides behind the scenes.

3D development has been ongoing for many months and most of the initial work was to allow it to be ported over. Most important moving forward is the fact that it's now shared between FM and FML.

In amongst all of that preparation work, we've managed to secure a bit of an exclusive in that FML will be the first time that you'll be able to play night matches under floodlights within the 3D engine and we've got a few screenshots showing that off.

There's been a few leaked screenshots from our beta testers so some of you will have already seen that we've broken down the assets required by the 3D engine. Whilst this doesn't mean that much to most it does ensure that if there are new animations or changes to existing 3D assets you wont have to re-download everything each time – just the bits necessary.

3D is optional so those of you that don't like it will be able to turn it off (or not even download it). Matches can be played where one manager is on 2D and one is on 3D and this will form a large part of our testing in the final phases.

For those of you with machines not capable of running 3D the system will alert you if it thinks you might struggle however if you've experience of playing FM you will already know the limitations of your system.

In the coming weeks we hope to bring you a little video of the 3D in action.

Oliver Collyer talks FML 3D

The 3D in FML has come a long way in recent weeks and months, and we're pleased to say that it's shaping up nicely and we've even found time for some of the little 'luxury' touches that we didn't want to talk about before in case we ran out of time.

For example, we've hooked up with a live weather data provider to ensure that suitable weather conditions are applied to the match based on the real-life weather at the venue of the match. If you're from England then expect English weather that matches what you can see outside!

Similarly, we track the sunrise and sunset hours to ensure that the correct lighting conditions are used for the match. If you're someone who plays all his matches in the dead of night, then expect all your matches to be floodlit! We've also hooked in a basic depiction of your each stand in your stadium, so for example if you've got three little stands and then one large 3-tier one, you'll see this represented in the match.

Although we've not gone to the level of detail of showing the exact composition of individual blocks and rows within your stand (hopefully that will come later), at least now you get a good feel for whether you are playing at a big or small stadium.

Pitch condition now comes into things for the first time in FML – the higher the reputation of your club the better quality of the pitch with the ball physics and certain aspects of player behaviour varying according to the pitch quality – play on a waterlogged one and you'll see the ball slow down rapidly when it hits the surface. This all goes to make the match experience more interesting – play a new club in a tricky FA cup away tie and you might find your team of relative superstars having to adapt their style of play on a dodgy muddy pitch as the rain pours down and the tackles fly in, roared on by the locals.

To get the most out of 3D we recommend using the new expanded match view, accessible via a click of a button. In this view (which is also available for the traditional 2D view for those giving 3D a miss) the pitch expands to the size of your window so you can really feel part of the action. A series of shortcut buttons along the bottom allow you full control and you can still banter with your opponent via a chat box which you can open or close at any time and which notifies you when your opponent has something to say. At the moment we're just ironing out the last few remaining stability and compatibility issues, and adding the final bit of polish.
