Many fans of Championship Manager Online voiced their discontent here on CVG after the football management MMO was canned last month. But, with a re-launch of their own online management sim, Football Manager Live, Sports Interactive believe they can offer a new home for budding managers craving online competition.

When asked whether he thought FML could attract the abandoned Champ Man players, Product Manager Marc Duffy told CVG that it could, but it wouldn't be a seamless transition:

"I think we can. I have seen that there's a lot of Champ Man Online players that are going to give FML a go for the reboot so I think there's definitely something in the game for them. I think the people who play FML are the one's that like that rags to riches lower league manager type approach."

Duffy pointed out that FML is fundamentally different to other online management sims thanks to a unique angle: "I liken FML to when we first launched Championship Manager back in the 90s," he explained. "It was something a little bit different and I think it took a while to catch on. FML is a bit like that as well: You're the chairman the chief executive, you're the grounds man and you're the kit man. You can do lots of different functions in the game, whereas a lot of the other games in the market that are online are more about managing your favorite team"

With Championship Manager Online now non-existent, Football Manager Live faces very little in terms of direct competition, but Duffy makes a point to 'warn against complacency', "There was Sky Sports Online about six or seven years ago, maybe it was a bit ahead of its time back then but that had a lot of money put into it, it was a reasonable game as well," he said. "It seems a very difficult area for people to do well in, which is why I think it's going to take a little while for us to get people used to what the game's all about."

The new Football Manager Live is currently in its beta stage with the re-launch expected to happen over a few days from next Wednesday according to the FML official forum.
