Whenever I mention women’s football on social media, people inevitably respond by asking when we’re going to release a women’s football version of Football Manager. Up until now, I’ve always replied with vague answers such as “When we do it, we’ll do it properly”.

What I haven’t said, because we tend to keep our plans under wraps, is that we’ve been working on women’s football in the background for some time now. A few people inside football are aware of this, as we’ve been talking to them about it behind the scenes, but now I believe that the time is right to go public with our plans.

Before I get into the detail, though, I would like to make one thing incredibly clear… we have NO interest whatsoever in making a standalone women’s football version of FM.

What we are doing is adding women’s football to FM... one sport, one game. FM players will be able to move seamlessly from managing a men’s team to a women’s team and back again. Women’s football will be a part of the living, breathing world that constitutes every one of your FM saves; that world will just be whole lot bigger and a little more varied.

We also know that adding women’s football to Football Manager is going to cost millions and that the short-term return it delivers will be minimal. But that’s not the point.

There’s no hiding that there’s currently a glass ceiling for women’s football and we want to do what we can to help smash through it. We believe in equality for all and we want to be part of the solution. We want to be a part of the process that puts women’s football on an equal footing with the men’s game. We know that we’re not alone in this – the historic TV deal that Sky and the BBC recently agreed with WSL in England is proof of that – but we intend to do everything we can to get women’s football to where it deserves to be.

We know that our voice is very powerful and we want to use it for good.

Longer term, as the women’s game grows in popularity, the financial rewards may come, but at the moment we’re embarking on this journey because we know it’s the right thing to do.

So let’s dig a little into the details...

One request we’ve had over the years is to release a women’s database that works with the existing FM. This simply wouldn’t work, as there’s a lot more to adding women’s football to FM than simply replacing the male players with female players, but the question of women’s data is an interesting one, so let’s start there.

First of all, it’s going to take some time to build a comprehensive global database of women’s football. Our existing database has taken 28 years to build (so far) and there’s a lot of info in there that we need to research when adding just one team, let alone multiple leagues.

To get our women’s database right we will have to examine every single in-game attribute and define exactly how we judge the data; attributes such as pace, acceleration and agility will likely stay with the same range, but some attributes may need a different scale. These attributes also feed into our match engine of course, and work done in this area (for example, looking at height of players and how that may affect how they play – such as aiming shots higher if a goalkeeper is smaller) will be of benefit for the match engine overall.

And data, of course, is just one of many elements that are going to need careful consideration.

For example, we already have female character models in the game, but these currently only represent staff members – and our in-game staff models are relatively basic and require a limited number of animations. We have thousands of ‘motion captured’ animations for our male footballers and when you apply many of these animations onto female bodies… well… they kind of move like cowboys.

Women’s body shapes are different to men’s and so is their bone structure, so we have no choice but to go back to the beginning and recreate all of our existing motion captured animation data using female players. That’s not just a case of going into a motion capture studio for a couple of days either – it takes months to clean up and perfect the data generated by each motion capture session and get it looking right in the match engine.

Our in-game female 3D models, historically, are also not as advanced as the male versions and women’s football kits are also different (once again due to those different body shapes) so there’s more work to be done there too. Our art and animation teams have been growing over the last couple of years with this extra work in mind.

It doesn’t stop there either… the transfer system in women’s football is also different to the men’s, as are the financial and wage structures. We will also have to accommodate the unique rules of many of the women’s leagues.

Then there are other questions that we have to ask ourselves, such as how detailed should we go initially? There is a lot of existing literature available about the impact of the menstrual cycle on training and injuries, but how do we incorporate this without it having a major effect on gameplay? And what about pregnancy? If we have pregnant players and staff in game, do we need different 3D models for the different stages?

And then there’s the in-game text and translation to be considered. You can already play the game as a male or female manager, so most staff ‘strings’ (the term used for phrases in game that refer to a character, whether playable or otherwise) are already in place for both male and female characters. However, as all of the current in-game footballers are male, all of the strings relating to them are gender specific.

This leaves us with more than 100,000 strings to rewrite… and then translate into 19 languages (which works out to be approximately 3,000,000 words). This is a simpler task for some languages than it is for others; Danish, for example, has no adjectival agreement or other gender-specific grammar considerations, so we should in theory be able to batch translate ‘he’ to ‘she’ (for example) and then go through each string via the ‘localisation QA’ process to see what was missed. With many other languages (including French and German) that’s simply not possible and each string will have to be retranslated from scratch.

That process is going to take up a lot of time, as well as generating the bulk of the cost.

As I mentioned at the beginning of this piece, we’ve been working on this project for quite some time already. I’ve had many, many conversations with people who work in all areas of women’s football and have built up relationships with some amazing people in the sport who will be helping us realise this dream.

In terms of practical steps, we’ve already completed our first two motion capture sessions with the London-based twin professionals, Rosie and Mollie Kmita. Given the restrictions applied to motion capture during a pandemic it was essential that we were able to work with two people who shared a ‘bubble’ and Rosie and Mollie provided the perfect solution, as well as being fantastic footballers. This, of course, is just the start of the ‘mocap’ process and there will be plenty more sessions carried out over the coming months, including specific goalkeeper sessions.

One member of the SI team who is already deeply engrossed in this project is our newly-appointed head of research for women’s football, Tina Keech. Tina, a qualified coach and former head of research and analysis at Smartodds, has already started the process of building our women’s database.

Our design team is about to start work on taking the information we’ve gathered to date and turning that into specific tasks and a full design document. As with most of FM’s features, that document will give us a multi-year roadmap for engineering tasks. Nothing in FM is ever finished – there is always more we can add – and the same will be the case with women’s football. It won’t be a case of just adding it, then forgetting about it, but it will continue to grow along with the rest of the world that we create for you to manage in.

Of course, many of the tasks mentioned so far can run simultaneously, which will shorten the timeline, but we are realistic that bringing women’s football to FM is going to be a multi-year project. At this stage we don’t know exactly how long the process will take so we can’t say exactly which version of FM will see women’s football make its debut, but rest assured that our plan is to make this happen as soon as we possibly can, whilst ensuring that you are still getting all the features you’d expect from new versions of FM by adding resources to the existing team.

I mentioned earlier in the blog that the cost of this project will be substantial. To help offset some of those costs we have already started conversations with some potential commercial partners who share our vision and who will be able to offer financial help in return for a wide integration of their brand into FM.

But we’re also committed to being a commercial partner for women’s football. We have ongoing partnerships with AFC Wimbledon Ladies & Girls and Watford Women as part of our deals with their men’s teams. But that’s not enough. So, today I’m also proud to announce that we’ve signed a commercial partnership agreement for the 2021/22 season with Leicester City Women, which will see FM branding feature on the dugout and interview boards for the club.

I’d like to finish by saying that I hope these blogs can become a semi-regular feature. We know that last year’s piece which explained how COVID 19 was going to be handled in FM21 was very popular and many of you appreciated the transparency, so we’ll look to ‘pull back the curtain’ a little more in the future.

This Update is now live on FM21 (PC/Mac/Xbox Game Pass for PC), FM21 Xbox Edition (Console/PC/Game Pass), FM21 Touch (PC/Mac/iOS/Android) and FM21 Mobile (iOS/Android).

Whilst the weather outside is frightful, staying indoors to play Football Manager is starting to look even more delightful, and what better way to enjoy than with the 21.2 major update? Containing a number of tweaks, improvements and fixes as listed in our changelist below, the update is save game compatible allowing you to continue your pre-existing saves. 

That’s not all though, we’re also pleased to announce the release of updates for Football Manager 2021 Touch across PC/Mac/Android and iOS and Football Manager Xbox Edition available exclusively on the Xbox platforms.

The time has arrived… Football Manager 2021 is out now.

PC and Mac users can download and play FM21 now from the Epic Games Store and Steam. Those who have been enjoying the FM21 Beta can find details below on how to update their game and continue their progress.

We’re also delighted to say that FM21 Mobile can now be downloaded from the App Store and Google Play. Those of you who pre-ordered on iOS devices will be able to play immediately.

FM21 Xbox arrives on December 1st, with FM21 Touch (PC/Mac/iOS/Android) joining the squad on the same day. We’ll also be making a return to Nintendo Switch ™ before the end of the year.

FM21 Beta Players
Those of you who’ve been enjoying the FM21 Beta can simply quit and restart the Epic Games Launcher or Steam and the game will update to the full release build. All single-player progress made in the Beta will automatically carry forward.

Quit and restart the Epic Games Launcher and you’ll see that Football Manager 2021 is available to install.

PURCHASES FROM STEAM
Simply quit and restart Steam and you’ll see that Football Manager 2021 is available to install.

PURCHASES FROM ANY OTHER PARTICIPATING DIGITAL RETAILERS
Your retailer should have sent you a confirmation email with a code, or a link to redeem your code which can be activated on Steam by following the instructions below:

1.    Launch the Steam client software and log into your Steam account or create a new, free account
2.    Click the Games Menu
3.    Choose Activate a Product on Steam
4.    Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the activation process

Your world just got bigger 

There are three brand-new nations for you to test your managerial prowess as we welcome Argentina, Mexico and Canada to the Football Manager Mobile series.

This means there are new divisions to dominate and a fresh pool of players to scout – unearth the gems hiding in those parts of the world. 

Totally revamped tactics 

Tactics in FM21 Mobile have been finely tuned so you can get the very best out of your squad. Managers now have more tools to play with including a host of renewed tactical templates as well as brand-new player roles. Simply select a tactical style from pre-sets so you can Gegenpress, Tiki-Taka or Route One your way to glory. 

Within that tactics, you can now deploy Roaming Playmakers and Inverted Wingers in your team to give you new ways to piece together your tactical masterplan. 

This revamp also considers set-pieces, which have been re-defined for the FM21 season. Not only can you assign a list of set-piece takers, but you can now dictate player instructions for both defending and attacking dead-ball scenarios. Get your centre-backs and target men in prime positions to meet the ball in dangerous areas at both ends of the pitch or organise intricate short-corner routines to surprise your opponents. 

Brand new player dynamics 

Squad hierarchy and player social groups give you, the manager, the full picture of your team. Understanding squad dynamics is crucial when controlling player morale and building success as a squad. Learn how your players operate and communicate together to create an atmosphere everyone can develop in. 

This new feature is bolstered by the addition of Club Captains. Now you can assign a captain and vice-captain when you walk into the training ground doors on day one. In FM21 Mobile, like in other iterations of FM, the captain’s role is crucial in maintaining a relationship between you and your players. Get the skipper on your side and the dressing room will be a happier place but upset your captain and your team's morale may suffer. You cannot afford to get things wrong with the team's leader.

New and Improved Interaction 

You now have far more interaction options, including both conversation topics and answers. You’ll be able to speak to players and the media on a whole host of different subjects, giving you the detail you need to control every moment and make decisions in your club’s best interest. 

On the other end of these conversations, most commonly, will be players as FM21 has revamped their role in interactions. Players now give far more feedback to the events they experience and will be more vocal – as they are in real life – in reaction to things they admire or are unhappy about. 

Far More Detail 

We’ve added new levels of depth across the entire game world.  

Feeder Clubs 

Existing affiliate links between elite clubs and feeder clubs now allow those managers to send and receive young players on loan to help aid their development while winning valuable points for the feeder team. FM21 Mobile also allows you to create new affiliate links with feeder clubs so you can build your network in order to secure valuable deals. 

Enhanced News and Media 

News items and media articles are now much more reactive and responsive to you and your club’s movements. You’ll have the ability to comment on what you see too which can come in handy when you have to defend your player’s poor performances and publicly back your squad. FM21 Mobile blurs the lines slightly between the match action and the media reaction.

Customise Pre-season 

FM21 Mobile gives you the ability to arrange your own friendlies. This new level of customisation allows you to test your squad against the very best and work on pre-season sharpness. 

If you have bought FM21 from a SEGA-approved digital retailer, you’ll be delighted to know that the game is now fully playable* and includes the online modes Create-A-Club and Online Career Mode with cross-compatibility between Epic and Steam. As always, any progress made in Career Mode can be carried forward when your game updates on full release on Tuesday 24th November.

Decision-Making

Part of what makes the match engine in Football Manager so realistic is the fact that the players and officials will each be making a decision every quarter of a second, which we call a “slice”. This constant stream of decision-making means that each player continually assesses the situation around them and performs the action that they think is best, based on their attributes.

In FM21, decision-making is more nuanced than ever before. This is all due to the fact that players in the engine will now be able to change their original decision mid-slice as the situation around them develops. This allows your players to be more reactive and make faster decisions which leads to a more realistic match experience with more fluidity and a greater variety of actions performed across the 90 minutes as a result.

This overhaul to decision-making works hand-in-hand with the improvements that the Animation and Match AI teams have made to the animation system itself in this year’s game. The Match team have reworked several elements of the decision-making code to supply the best information from the AI into the animation system so that those animations look better and smoother in action.

Defensive Awareness

One of the most impressive examples of the improvements to player decision-making is Marking in FM21. With the improved decision-making, defenders can now react more intelligently to attacking movement and can pass their marking duties on to another defender while they move to close down another player as the attack unfolds. This will occur in both open play and during set-pieces.

Defensive lines will also behave more like a single unit, working together to disrupt opposition attacks and isolate potential threats. Defenders will jockey players and prevent attackers from dribbling more often too as they look to make it much harder for attackers to move into dangerous areas. Defenders are now more adaptive when facing long balls forward and will contest aerial battles more frequently in these situations to try to avoid being left exposed by a flick-on or outnumbered during a direct counter-attack.

Attacking in the Final Third

Because of the extensive improvements we’ve made to the defensive AI, we’ve also had to bolster attacking AI to keep everything fairly balanced. Specifically, we’ve worked on improving the movement and variety of play in the final third to give attackers more tools to try to get the better of their defensive counterparts.

Let’s start with attacking movement. We’ve focused a lot of attention on improving the positioning of both AMCs and strikers and, depending on their role, they will now look to come to the ball more often and offer support for team-mates on the ball or drag defenders out of position. We’ve also tweaked the ‘Focus play down flanks’ instructions to improve the effectiveness of wide play.

Focusing play down either or both flanks or through the middle will now feature more obvious attacking movement as teams will look to overload certain areas of the pitch in order to exploit space in the corresponding opposite areas.

In general, FM21 sees much more movement in the final third as attackers look to create space or exploit gaps in the defensive line.

There are few things more satisfying in football than a perfectly weighted through ball and in FM21 you’ll notice more attempted through balls being played in the final third as well. Of course, not all of them will be successful but if you’re lucky to have one of the world’s best passers at your disposal you should find it much easier to unlock defences with a single pass.

It’s not just the build-up play that has been enhanced in FM21, there have been some notable changes to play inside the area too. Players are now much more aware of how much time they have to shoot and have better spatial awareness, especially in one-on-one situations. Speaking of which, when one-on-one with the ‘keeper, players will make better shot selections based on their angle to the goal and the position of the goalkeeper. You’re likely to see more dinks over the goalkeeper this year. Shot selection and spatial awareness are tied into the player’s attributes so more skilful players will have a wider variety of shots at their disposal and know exactly how much space they have to work in.

You’ll also see a higher percentage of players passing, and not shooting, from tight angles, depending on your tactical set up and the player concerned – some just want to try and score from anywhere, as they do in real life too.

Attacking players will also go to ground more easily in the box and not always if they’ve felt some contact from a defender. You’ll see them appeal for penalties to the referee for good measure as well.

There are more factors taken into account when VAR is used too. Previously, referees would have a very high percentage chance of making the correct decision when using VAR in FM but, as we’ve seen in the real world, there are some instances where VAR is subjective and referees don’t always make the decision that the majority would deem to be the “right” one. So, in FM21, referees will sometimes be more subjective when using VAR for anything other than offside calls and you’ll even see inconsistencies from one referee to the next when making calls on similar scenarios, just like in real life!

One other addition when it comes to offsides – players will now be more aware of when they’re in an obviously offside position and will avoid engaging with the ball as a result. Nice.

Central Play 

In FM20, we felt that the midfield action was being bypassed too often and that the play that did take place in the middle of the pitch often didn’t do enough to reflect the frequently chaotic nature of midfield battles we see taking place week in, week out in real life. This was something that was echoed in the feedback from you, the FM community, which is why it became a major focus for us to improve this year. For FM21, we’ve placed a greater emphasis on central play that results in a more authentic flow to events in central areas.

Firstly, movement in the centre of the pitch has been reworked for FM21. One of the most obvious examples of this is the way that we have increased the number of interceptions across the pitch but particularly in midfield areas. Players will also now actively look to block passing lanes rather than following the movement of the ball. This brings the number of interceptions in our match engine more in line with the numbers you’d see during a real match.

We’ve also rebalanced risk-taking from players in central areas. The entire philosophy around central play is now built around getting the most impactful attacking players on the ball quicker which means certain players will look to play riskier, more direct passes into team-mates occupying central attacking areas. This is in part due to a reworking of the ‘Focus Play Through Middle’ team instruction which now places greater emphasis on those progressive central passes.

Defenders are also now more aware of the threat of play in central areas and will react more instinctively to those scenarios which will lead to even more interceptions as a result.

Goalkeeper Intelligence

Last but by no means least, we turn our attention to the heroes between the sticks. Goalkeepers in FM21 will be quicker to go to ground in certain situations, for example, if they decide that’s the best option to prevent a low shot or to cut off space in front of the attacker.

It’s not just outfield players who gain from the improvements to decision-making either. Goalkeepers are now much more conscious of the time they have to position themselves for an opponent’s shot. When attackers are in or around the box, good goalkeepers will look for players who are setting up to shoot and will set themselves accordingly.

In FM21 Goalkeepers are now more likely to try to make aerial interceptions by coming out to claim crosses and, depending on their attributes, may look to punch the ball more often as well. FM’s Glovesmen will also now take weather conditions into account so, for example, on a wet and windy day, they will be more likely to punch the ball away instead of risking a dangerous catch.

Goalkeepers in particular also benefit from improvements to the Match Ratings system in FM21 too. 

The Final Word

The improvements to the AI in FM21’s match engine will be immediately noticeable from the moment you enter your first match. The action will feel more unpredictable and fluid and will, simply put, be a more realistic simulation of football than ever before.

The extra level of depth that we’ve introduced to decision-making has led to improvements across the pitch with new variations in player movement, a refined marking system, a renewed focus on midfield action and goalkeepers that are more adaptive to the environment around them.

You now have the ability to ask players to speed up their contract decision making - Perfect for crazy deadline days.

We decided not to.

When developing Football Manager, and our games before that, we’ve always tried to make entertainment that provides the best value for money on the planet and also offers an escape from the real world. People have always used FM to create their own fantasy world and we reasoned that now, more than ever, they needed something to take them away from reality… not to remind them of it.

Of course, we couldn’t stop people who ‘mod’ our games from including COVID-19 in FM20, but we really dislike what their work did to our game – and from what I’ve seen on social media, so did most of the people who downloaded and used those mods. FM is meant to be an escape from reality, and having a squad ravaged with an illness has the opposite effect.

However, that was FM20. We knew that our stance would have to change for FM21 as COVID-19 and – possibly more significantly – its social and economic effects have had a serious impact on real world football. As we pride ourselves on FM’s realism, we knew that we had to reflect that, while still offering that escape.

As a result, for FM21 we’ve tried to strike the best possible balance between realism and escapism.

So, for this blog, I’m going to deal with how we’ve chosen to reflect COVID-19 in FM21’s gameplay. If you’re at all interested in how it has affected development, you can find more information by finding out how COVID-19 impacted the making of Football Manager 2021 - it’s something I’m bound to be talking about a lot more in interviews in the coming weeks and months.

There’s also a request for your help in one area.

Let’s start with the money side of things. It’s no secret that football clubs around the world are suffering financially. The absence of supporters from the stadiums not only means a huge loss of revenue from ticket sales, but also from concessions and merchandising.

This will be reflected in FM21, as your chosen club’s finances will inevitably be in a worse state than you would normally expect when you start a new save. The most visible knock-on effect of this will be transfers; we’ve rewritten chunks of our transfer system to ensure that while superstars and wonderkids will retain their value, FM21 will see more ‘loan to buy’ offers, the value of mid-range players dropping and clubs in real financial trouble trying to move players on a more regular basis. However, as money comes back into the game over time, the transfer system will adapt and eventually return to some sense of ‘normal’.

So that’s one area of realism, here’s a little escapism.

Something we thought long and hard about was when (and whether) we should let supporters back into FM21’s stadia. We eventually decided that crowds will attend matches from the very start. The revenue this generates will allow clubs to get back onto an even keel sooner and will help with the above-mentioned in-game financial and transfer systems.

With the leagues, we have adjusted the football calendar where appropriate. In many cases, the usual ‘start dates’ are out of the window, but they soon revert to normal. In certain leagues (those that have already finished by the time the game is released) we’ve made the decision to start at the beginning of next season – and we thank all of our licensors that we’ve discussed this with for their support in this decision.

I’m not going to list all of the leagues affected by this, as that would be a bit too much for this blog (and not all of those decisions have been finalised as yet) but I will provide one good example… MLS. Because MLS runs over the summer, that competition is normally reaching its climax when FM is released and we would therefore allow managers to ‘go back in time’ and play from the beginning of the season. However, with the shift in dates, we are now going to start MLS from the forthcoming season.

The date your save starts may also have changed, depending on the start date of your chosen league. Pre-season will still be five to six weeks (rather than the 12 weeks that they often were during the testing cycle on the game, due to the game normally starting at the start of July) but, for example, this season’s EFL Championship kicks off in September, rather than the traditional August.

Finally on the subject of dates, transfer windows will start by matching their current real life counterparts, but will revert to ‘normal’ in season two.

Match wise, we’re going with substitution rules as they are in real life for season one; if a league is using five subs (rather than three) then so are we. Then, like the transfer windows mentioned above, revert to ‘the old normal’ in season two, unless the competition in question has already indicated that the plan is to adopt the new rule for the long term.

Pre-match, you’ll see team line-ups as normal, as we want to keep the same sense of normality created by having supporters in the ground. Also, you won’t be seeing posts cleaned before penalty shoot-outs as, again, that’s just a reminder to the strange situation of the real world currently that we want to avoid.

Some of these choices may come across as arbitrary, but we’ve looked at every area individually (and the entire game holistically) and we think we’ve made the correct choices.

To be really clear, Covid 19 will not appear as an "illness" in FM21.

But there’s one point where we haven’t settled on a decision, because I would like to throw it out to you, the people who will spend huge amounts of time playing FM in the coming months. The feature in question is the new ‘gesture system’ that you may have seen revealed in our new headline features video. 

When this system was first devised we included a number of gestures that (at the time) were completely normal, but now aren’t part of daily life – one perfect example being ‘shake hands’ as a greeting. In game, we have changed that one to ‘elbow bump’, which seems to be the most used tactic to avoid hand shaking at the moment. However, I’m aware that that goes against our ‘trying to be Covid free, whilst not completely ripping up the real football world’ policy.

So, we’re throwing this open to a vote. A simple two choice vote between ‘Normal gestures’ or ‘Covid safe gestures’ (so that no one can vote for Handy McHandshake).
